Looking to write a book? Have a manuscript ready already? Thinking of self publishing? Maybe we can help.
Tired Dogs Press is not a conventional publisher or vanity press. We are a friendly, affordable fee-for-service publishing outfit based in Bellingham WA. We take no commission and you own your own work and copyright. See our Services page for details.
If you’re thinking NY Times Bestseller list, then please do look for a reputable literary agent first to help you find a conventional publisher.
On the other hand, given how tough the traditional book publishing model has become, we believe in finding creative ways for authors to be more autonomous, to take back some control from the evil demons (okay, not that evil) of the corporate publishing world, which in our experience, has gotten a little too big for its britches.
That said, there are some outstanding small publishers out there, run by genuine, ethical humans, who may be interested in publishing your work. Many are worth looking into, especially if your book may appeal to a niche market, a broad audience, or the latest trendy thing. They can also get you into distribution channels that might not be available to self-publishers. Yet, even when you think you’ve found the perfect fit, it can still be tough to get a foot in the door.
Which is where Tired Dogs Press might be an option for you. If you are moved to write a book, there are still a number of ways to get it published. We can help you navigate these myriad avenues.
We are mostly interested in helping writers, especially in the Pacific NW, who are considering self-publishing their work. If your work is honorable, don’t buy the myth that self-publishing is some kind of vanity thing. In the old days, when decent writers had half a chance of landing a traditional publisher, the snub at least made some sense. Not any more. If that’s not enough, know that the hugely successful author of The Martian, Andy Weir, self-published his book. Margaret Atwood, Wayne Dyer, Mark Twain, Stephen King, and many others also self-published one or more times.
So think of yourself as an artist, a creator. Your book is no less worthy just because you essentially created it yourself and put it out to the world.
Maybe your dream is to publish a memoir, photo book, a little book of poetry, a local history, or your 23rd attempt at blockbuster space fantasy novel. If you could use some support with copy editing, organizing your manuscript, book design, graphics, photo editing, ISBN, prepress work (we use Adobe InDesign), or ebook formatting, then feel free to get in touch. Unlike the big shots, we’re quick to respond. Maybe we can even do coffee.
Seriously, if you have an idea or a manuscript that really wants to be a book–and it doesn’t matter if you envision printing one copy or ten thousand–we can probably help.
